The more I think about this, the more I'm puzzled - why, after a clean install, are your registry setting still there - did you do an "Upgrade" from the Windows 7 installation - if so, that changes little but it does try and repair the damages SxS files.

The DISM approach is a good one too.

Did you ever mention what CPU you have in there, BTW.? Have you ever run a system audit with Speccy or similar?

That's on the list too. Freezes like this can be PSU-related but normally you get some log warning or the BIOS tells you.

The memory one is subtle - sometime the BIOS can get it wrong, even if memtest86+ says the memory is OK.

Doing this stuff remotely is a pain - hanging is normally bus-related , but power can be a problem, especially if you have a lot of devices, like hard drives...

Mark makes a good point - the wattage rating of the PSU might be worth investigating if you've added hard drives or power-hungry display cards. PSUs fail too....

I bought the PC with 16GB of RAM and Windows says I have 16GB yet this is a pair of 16GB modules.

I bought the PC from a local specialist compnay who seem to knopw that they're doing. They routinely make very high spec PCs for gamers so this was a modest machine by their standards. I haven't looked at the PSU details but I can hardly be taxing it too hard. The voltages look OK in the BIOS. I should get a utility that checks these from Windows - I assume such a thing exists.

So far so good after the BIOS reflash to version F8. No freeze after a full switch off. Yet

Are my registry setting still there? Whay do you think that? I reformatted the SSD before doing a full install.

I've run Speccy. The CPU is an i7 2.7GHz.

I've attached a saved .speccy file in case you want to have a look.

Not too sure about the voltages now. Speccy says:

The CML16GX3M2A1600C10 is a 16Gb *kit*, i.e. 2 x 8Gb DIMM for 16Gb in total, not 32Gb.

Wouldn't worry too much about that - Do you have the GigaByte tools installed - the way motherboards report voltages relies on mapping that non-manufacturers' tools may not report correctly.

If the BIOS reports them OK (you can see them in the BIOS) or the GB tools are good, then they are OK.

BIOS reported the voltages as OK. Not sure where to find the relvant Gigbyte tools. Have looked on their website and not found them.

Done a couple of "switched off at the wall" restarts and so far so good. Need a "fingers crossed" smiley.
