Hi.
I decided to bite the bullet with one base today. I managed to clear a space under the old base and remove it. You need to drift out the base using a centre punch and tap it with a hammer from above the chassis.
I have some stepped drills and I gradually was able to open out the hole. The steel is quite substantial and the drill got blunt quite quickly. Fortunately I got it to nearly the diameter I wanted. The last of the work was done with the curved side of my file. I managed to get a tight interference fit pressing the base in from the top of the chassis. Measurements were made and there is still sufficient clearance for the EF50s and their retaining bracket from the focus coils.
In the picture you'll see the base in place and the construction of the old one. The new one is bigger but a high quality ex government ceramic type. The other base is more awkward and the focus assembly will need to be removed.
Unfortunately the RF unit uses the same type of bases but there is no way that these bases could ever be fitted. I'm going to have to loop the wires to the old decouplers of the new caps when I replace them so the bases are not strained.
