As for the topic, I'd suggest that we're pretty much at the point where EVs are not necessarily more expensive than similar ICE vehicles, though that's mostly because the prices of ICE vehicles have gone up a lot over the last 3 years. OK, if you look up something like the new Astra, that is available in either drivetrain, you do pay a premium to go EV, but compare a Tesla Model 3 with the saloon variants of the BMW 3 series or Aldi A4 or C-class. Or the MG4 with the Focus. If you are stuck in the "PCP loop", then going for EV is quite doable at a very similar to cost to the ICE vehicle you might have been considering.
We talked recently about 2/3 year old second-hand cars, and saw that they are pretty much at parity.
It's only at the low end of the market where it's harder. But as I pointed out, take a look at what you can get for a couple of grand today - as opposed to what a couple of grand could get you pre-pandemic. The market changed a lot in that period, and if you've not been keeping an eye on things, you might need to re-calibrate.
I'd love an EV. But happy to sit back and watch how the early adopters get on - we're fine with just one car for the time being.
But either way, debunking the myths from tabloids and pub bores is easy. Luckily, an engineering forum should be free of that sort of stuff, as we always fact-check before posting, right?
