Hi.
It's unlikely the steering wheel will have anything to do with powering it up. The steering wheel controls have resistors that are carefully selected to give a predetermined voltage change in a potential divider circuit from a very accurate supply voltage. You have switched and unswitched vcc inputs these can be joined together and fed from positive 12v and the case used as ground (negative) there is NO need to connect speakers unless you wish to check the audio output, a load is not needed.
There is also no need to have remote connected either as you need to know the required resistor values or do a scan which is is explained in the instruction book.
I've recently upgraded my Hyundai i10 ICE from the existing unit to one from a later model that has Bluetooth and DAB, although the unit looks virtually the same to get the steering wheel controls to work is difficult as the car needs a different clock spring, fitting the microphone too was a job as the head lining had to be lowered, it's been worth it though, have now hands free phone and music from the smartphone as well as USB which the basic head unit has anyway. I did high end ICE in Sony and Clydesdale too and did ICE installs at the weekends for a few years, sadly dried up these days as most cars have decent systems these days.
