Well! I eventually discovered that one of the ferrite rod antenna wires had come adrift. No wonder it was deaf! The construction is actually impressively repairable. Since it only has MW on AM there are only two coils on the ferrite: oscillator and antenna. Instead of fine wires being soldered to the pcb, the bar assembly has four metal posts on a carrier. The wires are soldered to the posts and the entire carrier then soldered to the PCB. I've not seen that arrangement before in a pocket radio, and it made repair a doddle. All that remains is a final MW alignment, a bit of plastic repair then final assembly and cleaning.
