Fantastic looking work, another project to do! I'm guessing it would also be possible to run some sort of disc sander on it as well, maybe from a grinder motor with driveshafts either end of the motor.
It's not 'ugly', if anything it looks like it's from the era where machines were made properly and built to last, not colourful and cheaply made as they are now
