The XP I cloned was an OEM Dell. Only BIOS boot works (even win7 on an UEFI PC as long as it was installed in Classic BIOS Boot Mode). The Win7 was a retail version installed via Classic BIOS mode on a UEFI PC. Also you need to have the VBox settings for Win7 SATA disks correct, sometimes the OS is installed in IDE mode. SATA is possible on XP but as the standard install disk didn't have drivers most XP SATA drives are in IDE mode in BIOS. I slipstreamed an XP install to a new disc with SATA drivers, maybe 2006, so I did some XP installs using "native" SATA.
The MS documentation is confusing. I had to try several times to get a vbox file that worked. Also on my XP the "Shadow Volume" copy option didn't work, but it was needed for the Win7 cloning.
