Hi.
I live very close to a local transmitter, its line of sight and about 4 miles away. Using the 4 transistor version I find it gives images unless I rotate the loop so I've stuck with my two transistor version. Back to back diodes at the loop can of course cause issues with strong signals but the advantage outweighs the disadvantages. I use 2N3866 (Motorola Equiv) from the GQRP club.
