That diode is just in series with the battery feed, so for testing purposes, you could short it out. If you were 100% confident that you'd never offer up the battery snap the wrong way around, you leave it shorted. But I have a cheap meter somewhere which lacks such protection, and I blew up the voltage regulator IC by doing just that (really must get around to fixing that!).
Just about anything would do to replace it. Assuming the original is an 1N4148, but it's not critical.
