Without sounding negative I really don't see the point of this.
In theory yes a VCR might work but why on earth would you want to record a chunk of Medium Wave and keep replaying it? It's like being firmly stuck in the past.
You can only sensibly listen to one broadcast at a time and all the rest may have no content you are interested in. For me build a quality pantry transmitter that is extremely easy to do and feed it with content you enjoy. Each to their own, but a VCR no way, I was sick of the sight of them in the trade and glad to see the back of them.
The VCR was only an idea. It would need to be modified. Frame/drum sync. Also there is the dropout issue at frame change. Not practical.
As I mentioned before it's not for ordinary listening, a simple AM low power TX and FM radio or MP3 player does that. Or my more complicated scheme (never implemented, I only listen to specific Sat stations on FM radio)
It's so a visitor at an exhibition or museum can tune an AM Radio when there are no stations left. It's now a bit late. It wasn't too late when originally suggested, and back then would have needed a modified VCR, maybe even a quadraplex or umatic. I can't see how issues with VHS would have been solved.
There is indeed no point at all for ordinary listeners and it needs a pretty expensive setup to record. A wide band DAC isn't expensive so the replay for a demo at many exhibition sites is cheap.
