R4 MW really threw me when I first heard it shortly after moving to Cornwall. I was testing a "new" receiver on MW when I thought "that sounds like R4". I tuned the same frequency a couple of days later and it was still there. I then checked and found out what it was; it is only a 2kW transmitter with the main lobe beaming south west, to serve West Cornwall where some areas suffer from poor R4 LW reception from Droitwich. I actually get good R4 LW reception at home using an external aerial but very poor indoors with a ferrite rod. All in all I am very spoilt for BBC radio reception.
