Hi Rob,
You stated that your room is just over 3m x 3m and that your speakers are 3m apart.
This means your speakers are near the corners of the room and a square room is unfortunately one of the worst shapes giving rise to frequency dependent nodes which probably won't help with the balance problems you're experiencing.
I'd suggest you experiment with changing the position of your speakers.
