Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I have no paraffin to hand but I will keep it in mind for again.
I let it soaking last night. But it only wetted the top layer or two. The windings seamed to stop it from going any farther.
Today I put a basin under the windings and kept it soaked as I unwound it. It was messy but it worked and I was able to remove the paper layers as I went along.
It took a long time but eventually I got all the layers off. A total of 15680 turns of 0.08 mm wire, pyramid wound.
The 2V CRT heater winding which is on the same transformer has 8 turns which suggests 4 turns per volt.
This would make the no load voltage of the EHT winding quite high at around 5.5KV
