That Hotpoint is most likely an Indesit product, base Italian. When I dealt with the Italians they were only interested in selling appliances so they did not like selling spares and made everything as cheap as possible to get volume sales.
You are not alone, I hear more moans about modern appliances especially cookers every year. There is a general down grading of insulation, cheaper switch controls rather than simmerstats, lower power elements and thin metal work.
Want good old fashioned quality? Hard to find. Try Miele, Fisher & Paykel, maybe Gaggenau which is now Bosch. Remember I am now out of date so things may have changed, not for the better!
