For me the bibliography of any book is a dangerous place!
In Last Train to Hilversum there was a reference to to And The World Listened by Keith Wallis – a biography of Captain Leonard F Plugge.
Like most radio enthusiasts I knew a bit about Captain Plugge and his exploits with Radio Normandy. However, this this well-researched book – it seems to have been years in the making – tells of a fascinating life of a maverick who sought to challenge the BBC.
It tells of his pioneering experiments with early car radio and his subsequent tours across Europe and his ventures with many radio stations on the continent. Plugge was exceptional and enigmatic character who became an MP and whose radio production and recording business continued after WWII had seen the end of his broadcasting adventures. He also experienced no little personal tragedy. His story also reveals a coincidental link to the maverick challenger of the 1960s: Radio Caroline.
It is only available as a printed copy but new and second-hand ones are available from the usual sources.
