I can't claim a lot of double de-clutching experience but I think it is advantageous for the engine to retain its revs after you pulse it. I certainly found it was much easier in cars with heavy flywheels.
For my driving test my instructor suggested doing it on a slight up hill approach to a junction. The 100E Ford that I drove onlt had three forward gears and first was definitely without synchomesh. More by luck than good judgement I remember making a silent change.
