They are all good choices although I have never had any 1j18b's to try them. The 1j24b's are good in that they take very little heater current so for a battery powered setup they are ideal. I think that is sets the Russians used 1j29b's in RF and 1j24b's in IF stages. None of the rod pentodes are variable mu though. This is one reason why I am considering other than a pure rod pentode superhet set, another, lesser reason, being that I have read somewhere that the 1j29b's in the RF amp position of Russian radios could be readily overloaded hence they maybe have poor cross mod performance? A point that I would consider for myself as I have better valves for this position.
It's interesting what you say about Radio Caroline Trevor. It's good that you are getting it so well - a good design. Here I find that Caroline works well during the day but a foreign station chops in and out on the same frequency at dusk. I am almost never up late at night to even try to see if the conditions change again.
