To me the building and experimenting receivers and/or transmitters was the idea behind amateur radio, the learning and self build of the hobby. As such I commend what you are doing greatly, the licence now gives you more opportunities to do such things without to many recriminations providing the signals are clean.

Back to your project I have not come across the Russian rod valves so something I would like to delve into at some point. I have tried to pick up radio Caroline here in Blackburn in the late hours without success so will have to try again from time to time.
