I had a Peugot 305 diesel for a good few years. (Second-hand as usual here.) No turbo and the first vehicle I owned with a five-speed box. First thing I noticed was that I cut my monthly fuel consumption in half.
0-60 in about three days but used it with a trailer and it seemed to pull anything. I felt a bit short changed when it went to the scrap yard at 180k. It had never seen a welding torch – the first vehicle I owned where I didn't need a visit to the local cut and shut man – but the sub frame was delaminating. It was one of the last made – in fact when I went for parts I was often told they didn’t make them that late – and such parts, second-hand or otherwise, were like hens’ teeth by then even before considering if it was worth the hassle having it all apart.
At first I found it very slow but then I got used to a very relaxed way of driving and judging the road ahead so as to make the most of momentum.
