Certainly an interesting one and I agree with your first paragraph especially.
Perhaps it's because I've got thirty-odd years of general electrical experience behind me but AC/DC sets hold no fears for me and, irrational as it is, I prefer working on them. The only 'belt' I've had so far was off an AC only one.
As for the extra contact on the pot, I expect it's the usual tone correcting thing. It looks electrically the same, even if it's drawn a bit different, to the Roberts R600 circuit.
