Neither did we. In fact the Sharp course which was industry standard drummed into engineers that there was no need to power up the oven at all except for the final test. Everything can be done cold. I did the Sharp course in the early 80s and again with Mastercare in 1999 even though I produced the certificate.
The big companies were strict with known dismissals for those working on a microwave without the papers and the service managers given a warning. I belive in all 6 engineers were killed in ten years according to union figures, UK wide.
