I don't know what the tick would be but it clearly connects / disconnects something so it might be a bad connection in a switch or or might be a thermal protection switch that only opens when it gets too hot. These protection switches are sometimes built into mains transformers but they are usually visible. (a pair of contacts with a bimetallic blade to open/close the contacts.
If you find that it is a thermal protection then try disconnecting the loads supplied by the transformer. This might be as simple as unplugging the HT rectifier valve. If that doesn't stop it clicking then remove all the other valves as the transformer will still be supplying the heater current to each valve. If it still heats up and clicks with all the valves removed then the transformer probably has a shorted turn and needs to be rewound.
