Really any wire is suitable
I have external aerial and earth sockets on a tiny valve radio called a Luxuri, it's also got a ferrite rod of 2 inches I have wound 3 turns of single core insulated wire around the opposite end to the tuning coil directly to the sockets.
There is no reduction in performance adding the coil to normal operation but feeding it from my Wellbrook loop, the boost is amazing , it is also very good on a long wire and earth, the loop is the best though.
