It's good you've found it Andy. From what I understand cathode followers can be prone to parasitic oscillations, especially with capacitive loads. I mostly use transistor emitter follower stages and often use 47 or 100 ohm stopper in the base connection. I'm sure it would take me a while to even work out how to fully analyse your circuit though. I am not sure what you mean about the diode but don't forget that if it is reverse biased at any point it will effectively be a capacitor with great effect at the frequency of RF parasitics. There is also it's breakdown voltage too as it may be switching like a zener (avalanche breakdown). Another point is low frequency oscillation is maybe more PSU related?
