The backlight is probably the a/k pads on the display. What's the voltage across those and is there any sign of a dry joint there...
It looks like an easy module to replace if you can get the spare anyway...
...and if the LCD is working, as ir may well be judging by the "torch test" you did, you can get replacement LCD backlight strips on eBay and elsewhere...
EDIT: Looking at the image of the display board by magnifying it (the image is not great resolution) it looks like someone has already attempted to remove the backlight and the joints look pretty dry/no solder?
