The only time I used a VPN was to download films as Torrent , I was aware though that if someone really wanted to trace me I was screwed. I used Express VPN, it was cheap & better than nothing. The Beeb though detected I was using a VPN straight away when I tried to access IPlayer as an experiment.
To try and cut down on unwanted marketing, and tiresome door knockers I run Linux Mint on my PC &use DuckDuck go, Firefox as browser - occasionally Tor & Protonmail for personnel emails and Adblock, this seems to deal with most intrusive & unwanted stuff. It is hard to know what to do for the best though as it's a very complicated
