I have no VPN experience but here's a useful article on a respectable website: https://www.techradar.com/uk/vpn/best-vpn
If I wanted to do things like internet banking on a public wifi network (such as in a cafe) then I'd instal a VPN on my phone/tablet/laptop. For ordinary browsing at home and out I'm not worried. Use Firefox or Vivaldi as your browser. Use DuckDuckGo as your search engine. Disallow 3rd party cookies (breaks some websites) and instal adblocking software such as Adblock+. Ghostery is another useful browser add-on that blocks a lot of rubbish.
I use Firefox with Adblock+ and Ghostery. I still use google for searching.
