You can get some kind of a picture on a scope without using the Z input. Dim memory suggests it's done by adding frame rate sawtooth to the video on the Y input. I think the last time I saw it was in the early 1980s at Michael Cox Electronics.

When I was at uni in the 70s the computer centre had a few graphics terminals. Tektronix 4014? They were vector based with storage CRTs. So a bit like doing 'scope art with a storage 'scope. Had to be booked if you wanted to use one. All good fun. This was when we had mainly printing terminals, a few text based VDUs and some were still punching cards,
