Thinking about the butterfly on the air intake makes me wonder if this practice is used today. Throttling the air intake will give rise to high emissions and greater fuel usage.
It's only in the last 20 or so years I've worked on Diesels being a hardened petrol head.
Of all the petrol engined cars I've had I'd quite happily say the 602cc Horizontally opposed Citroën engine used in the 2CV and its siblings was remarkable, streets ahead of the VW flat four with their appetite for exhaust valves, cooling issues bearing wear. There are others but in my opinion I'd rattle a few cages. Sorry for going OT
