This was my favourite ship I was on her for 9 very happy months in 1977/8. I had actually planned to make a model of one of the cargo pumps: they were steam reciprocating, pumping bulk tallow from the tanks, through heat exchangers in the engine room and back to the tanks to keep it liquid. There was a nauseating stench of rancid tallow throughout the engine room due to leaking glands on the pumps. I still have the drawings I made of the pumps. I did make other steam engine models from scratch when on watch, in the engine room, taking advantage of the workshop facilities. Something which I still plan to model is a set of working union purchase derricks as they are such an efficient method of loading and discharging cargo but have now probably all gone.
Bob, I guess that you were very familiar with the Oceanspan and other Marconi equipment. I used to spend a bit of time off watch in the radio room chatting with the R.O. and used to borrow his copies of Wireless World which were flown out to the vessel.
