I used the diode split method once to make a new overwind for a vintage set. It worked well. It made rewinding the overwind possible without wave winding.
The insulation separating the windings each side of the diode has to be good as it will have to withstand several KV. If you cant find diodes small enough to embed into the winding you can always use two or more bobbins with the diode linking the bobbins.
