I've just looked back at my correspondence with Ted and my memory was faulty. He suggested PMC, possibly the LB1, which he actually uses for day to day work. They've certainly had good professional reviews. He actually used them to replace a pair of ESL63s which needed more space than he had in his studio. While the LB1 is no longer made PMC still make similar speakers.
His other suggestion was LS3/5A. He bought a pair many years ago and uses them in a domestic system. I'm not so keen. Apart from some doubt I mentioned earlier they are expensive new, both expensive and hard to assess secondhand and probably need to be crossed over to a subwoofer for decent bass.
