A close friend who died earlier this year aged almost 90 had oxygen concentrators for the last year or 2 of his life. They were supplied by the NHS. There was a full sized one that supplied oxygen while he was in his usual chair at home or in bed. Noisy, so hooked up by some long plastic pipes. He also had a portable one which I think lasted about 2 hours on a charge, for when he was in other parts of the house or on increasingly rare outside trips.
He also had an oxygen cylinder as backup.
I can't help with any of the details of the insides of a concentrator. Strikes me that having a small oxygen cylinder is simpler.
