Thats a very big radio, 24" long, to use couriers to ship, Cant you persuade him / her to meet you at J29 of the M25. To be specific just off on the A127 at the Halfway House.
If you still intend to ship will need a lot of packing. Knock up a simple plywood framework to go up the sides with packing and leaving a gap between the front panel. Then two stout boxes and a lot of packing. I'd be aiming for 5" or so. If you can make handles it may get treated better.
