I recently took part in The Ramblers Asc to find old footpaths not marked on contemporary OS maps where you could compare an old OS map to the modern one. It was fascinating, you could see how our relationship with the land has changed. Iyou can see just how much has changed but then if you go back even further a lot of our field boundaries haven't changed for centuries, apart from the The Enclosure act that is.
Our modern use of maps to get from A-B, those of us who still use them that is, is relatively recent. Most old maps were just proof of who owned what, more about power and willy waving. I wonder if paper maps will die out, can you still buy road maps at garages?
