I did a pilot scheme in Coventry for smart parking must have been 5 years ago now.
We bid several schemes using the technology but the sheer cost put local authorities off.
Basically it monitors individual parking spots using wireless Magnetometers.
The data is collated and operates variable message signs to direct motorists to free parking spaces.
This can be used for on street parking or car parks.
Its very expensive requiring hundreds or even thousands of Magnetometers and Access points.
Some airport car parks have a similar system.
Incidentally as many will know Coventry decided to take out its pedestrian signals to replace them with Zebra Crossings.
An unexpected consequence (to Coventry anyway) was that Blind and especially deaf blind people no longer got a positive indication when it was safe to cross the road.
We did a pilot to add a facility to Zebra crossings to indicate when there was either no traffic or it was stationary.
It drove a phone app.
It works OK but nothing like as good as a tactile on a pedestrian facility
Don't underestimate Coventry they tend to be at the cutting edge of traffic innovations.
