Not doubting what you said about having a tie-up with Mazda, but it didn't kick in when designing the A316G!
It only makes it stranger for the choice of PCL83, when the 30PL1 would have been in stores already and is very similar... And if a new valve type was specified for the A316G, why not the ECL83 rather than PCL83?
Makes it all rather strange
