Agreed on reasons for the PCL83, though I thought Murphy largely used Mazda valves.
Transformer vs FW rectifier is a simple cost trade-off. Presumably they did their sums. Separate tap for pilot bulb? Maybe they didn't have 12V bulbs in stores and the extra cost of new item was greater than an extra tap.
