Interesting circuit.
Why not use an ECL83 so as only one tapping would be required for heaters and the pilot bulb, or a 12v bulb with the PCL83? The series 330k from the cartridge and 500k volume control may not be as daft as you think. It depends on the original cartridge and its optimum load, yes a 1m volume control will give greater volume but the response may have changed. Having the NFB loop as is "can" give higher LF gain at low volume giving a sudo loudness effect. Again a bit of cost cutting using a selenium rectifier and half wave. The tapping on the output transformer is common enough with Pye using it in many sets.
