As one would expect from Murphy even the most basic record player is properly designed.
A double wound mains transformer is much better than those horrible "live chassis" record players with the UL84 and UY85 valves. These days I won't accept such junk for repair.
Choice of valve is a bit strange but as an alternative the Mazda 30PL1 could be considered although I've never tried it myself in a record player. Some Pye Black Boxes use the PCL83.
