Yes, I'd agree that the procedure could be more user-friendly - I remember finding it confusing at first.
If you like, feel free to try it now - just a small picture or something simple. That way, I'll know for sure that I can "stand down", knowing that it's not a problem with the permissions or similar for people who are in the "New member" group. And once done successfully, I'll upgrade your membership to give you access to The Archive.
