Of course there are situations where a combi can't be used.
We shower every day and just use the flow from mains water. You get to quickly learn that while showering the other occupants don't use hot water.
I read somewhere that even the best insulated tanks will significantly cool during the day. It just seems so wasteful of energy having a large quantity of water just lying all day gradually cooling. I'd like to actually know the temperature drop over 8 hours in a storage tank. Most people are out of the house for over 8 hours a day at work.
