My son had a Honda whose magneto type coil went OC. It was a more complex circuit though as I think it did feed to a coil of sorts and had electronics. I don't remember details and it won't be too relevant here as it was a pickup coil (no points) too.
Simple engines used to use the battery for regulation which was Ok but obviously there was no charge regulation. The big British twins had a large zener diode for regulation. These are probably still obtainable but will be 12V. These days it is far more complex.
