Without immediate access to the circuit diagram what are the values of the main smoothing caps? If relatively small then a pair of series caps in the original can can be a cheap and easy solution. At the very low end of values it can be feasible to use non electrolytics. Either ordinary plastic dielectric or motor run again stuffed in the old can.
