Hi Francis and welcome to GVR. Not sure how I missed your intro when you wrote it but apologies for late response. You also live just down the road from me. I'm in North FInchley and can just see the top of the Ally Pally mast from my house. We were in the same room at Ally Pally for TV80 but I don't know if we met. The 405/240 demo was done with my WC-01 which is on long term loan to the owner of that set.
I've been in touch with Darryl ever since he started designing standards converters and have review samples of all of them. I think it unlikely that he'll ever make any more WC-01 but you never know. Frank has done some great work. When he first started doing standards conversion experiments I nudged him into using an FPGA and VHDL. It was a very steep learning curve for him and all credit for his achievements.
I went to the open day at Berkhampstead last year and spoke to several of your colleagues. I don't know if you were there on the day. Charles Fairall is interested in my 405 to 625 converter (which inspired Frank's Hedghog work) as the BFI's current procedure for recovering 405 material is rather clumsy. Until Covid-19 stopped us in our tracks, I was planning to work with a couple of guys from Kaleidoscope to ensure my converter could lock to Sony CV2000 recordings. I know that CV2000 is non-standard and worse than 405 on VHS/Beta but if you have VHS/Beta recordings we could do some experiments together. You're very welcome to visit me with a machine and tapes to see what we can do.
PS: Your "Spot Wobble" name had me confused for a moment. My friend Andy Hood used to go by a similar name in forums. He's now living in France and not really active in vintage forums at the moment.
