Success - but I dont know why??
Following on from Eddies suggestions, I disconnected the grey 250v and pink 230v taps and rewired the brown tap (240v) back to the original place on the voltage selector. I've rewired the switch and lamp as I had before. The first good sign was test continuity between the 0v blue primary tap on the switch with the 240v brown selector - this gave a signal on the multimeter, continuity. I then decided to go for it and put power on with the switch off and no shorts. I decided to switch on - the lamp then came on. I assume its wise NOT to reconnect the pink and grey primaries to the voltage selector ( I have cut the end of leads and put heat shrink son these). Can anyone please explain what is the issue here as I would think that although they wire wired into the voltage selector, unless the selector screw was put in place that they would not be connected to the circuit?
