Nice tip Amie although I would have to find something different from WD40 (horrible stuff lol). It sounds a more sensible way of what I do when I get irritated - melt the solder then quickly bang the board on the bench (the same as Sam). It does not work with lots of joints at the same time though. The device for chips I have seen was an attachment for a soldering iron which melts all joints at once. I have never used one. With single sided solder wick works well but I find double sided very tricky. I find it is often it is easier when de-soldering to apply more solder first as the sucker (or wick) has more to go on.
