I built a mains DC monitor - quite a simple thing - to check for effective DC on the mains. In my neck of the woods it is less than 40mV, and I have no problem with toroid buzz in 500VA transformers.
But decades ago we lived in St Neots in Cambridgeshire, and well before anyone had started thinking about DC on mains - and I had significant buzz which was time of day dependent.
