I have friends who take their hi-fi seriously and really just want to get the best performance out of their system. Swapping and changing various pieces of their gear to try and obtain that objective seems perfectly natural to me.
The fact that they are sometimes easily exploited by marketing hype, might be due to the fact that they have a little bit of knowledge, but without the same reasoning that we (with our experience) are able to apply.
