Since amplification is now so easy and cheap I don't understand why passive crossovers should still be used in new designs. Put the DAC and amps in the speakers and feed them with AES digital audio. Meridian have been doing that for decades. Their current range are all of the form DSPxxxx, take an RJ45 digital input, DSP based crossover and driver EQ, DAC and and multiple power amps (I suspect class D) all integrated into the enclosure.
